Newly developed Rapid Testing Kits were unveiled at the ongoing MIM Malaria Conference in Nairobi, advancing the capabilities of health ministries in endemic areas to better detect and manage malaria cases. The kits can be utilized at a community level, requiring minimal skill to operate, and they can produce results in as quick as five minutes. Several different brands are currently undergoing testing by the World Health Organization in five countries. Mass distribution of the new technology will aim to cut down on misdiagnoses and mismanagement of cases – especially in endemic areas where any case of fever is treated as malaria, resulting in presumptive, costly treatments.
